Pope Francis has a special devotion to Our Lady Untier of Knots. As a Cardinal studying in Germany, he came across the Bavarian painting of "Holy Mary, Our Lady Undoer of Knots" and took a copy back to Argentina and promoted devotion to Mary under this title. Cardinal Bergoglio also had an image of Our Lady Undoer of Knots engraved into a chalice and presented it to then Pope Benedict XVI. The theology of Mary untying knots goes back to the second century and was understood as Mary untying the knot of sin and disobedience created by Eve.
