"Him whom the heavens cannot contain, the womb of one woman bore." - Saint Augustine of Hippo

The greatest honor we can give Mary is to call her by her greatest title: "The Mother of God." Although God Himself has no beginning and no end, the second Person of the Most Holy Trinity chose to become man, and thus to be born; and in order to do so, He needed a mother. Because a mother is mother to the whole person, and not just their body, a humble woman became the "Mother of God," because Jesus is God. The Greek word "Theotokos" means God-bearer, and that is where this beautiful title of Our Lady comes from. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, is celebrated on January 1st, the 8th day in the octave of Christmas, and is such an important celebration that it is a holy day of obligation. It is also one of the oldest known feasts of the Virgin Mary.
