Why Do We Do Lenten Penance? Two Powerful Reasons to Embrace Sacrifice

Understanding the Meaning of Lenten Penance
Lent is a sacred season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, but why does the Church emphasize penance during this time? What purpose does it serve in our spiritual lives?
Penance is not merely about giving things up; it is about spiritual transformation and drawing closer to God. The Church encourages us to embrace penance for two main reasons: to atone for our sins and to unite ourselves more deeply with Christ’s suffering.
1. Penance as Atonement for Our Sins
Throughout Scripture, we are reminded of the need for repentance. Jesus Himself begins His ministry with the words, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
-
Sin Separates Us from God: When we sin, we create a barrier between ourselves and God. Penance is a way to restore that relationship.
-
The Power of Sacrifice: Giving up comforts and making sacrifices reminds us that true fulfillment comes from God alone.
-
The Role of Confession: The Sacrament of Reconciliation allows us to seek God’s mercy and grace, making our Lenten penance even more meaningful.
Biblical Example: In the Old Testament, sackcloth and ashes symbolized repentance. Jonah called the people of Nineveh to fasting and penance, and their repentance led to God's mercy (Jonah 3:5-10).
2. Penance as a Way to Unite with Christ’s Suffering
Lenten penance allows us to participate in the mystery of Christ’s Passion. Jesus suffered for us, and through our small sacrifices, we unite our hearts with His.
-
Carrying Our Cross: Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).
-
Spiritual Growth Through Sacrifice: When we deny ourselves, we open space for God to work more fully in our lives.
-
Acts of Love: True penance is not just about suffering; it should lead to deeper love for God and neighbor.
Saintly Wisdom: St. John Paul II reminds us, “We are not redeemed by Christ’s suffering alone, but by the love that made Him suffer.” Our sacrifices should be offered with love.
How to Live Out Lenten Penance
Lenten penance is not only about giving up chocolate or social media. It should be a path to deeper conversion. Here are some ways to practice meaningful penance:
-
Fast with Purpose: Let fasting remind you to hunger for God’s presence.
-
Daily Prayer: Use this time to strengthen your relationship with Christ.
-
Almsgiving: Give generously, knowing that every act of charity brings you closer to God.
-
Acts of Mercy: Forgive, serve, and love more intentionally this season.
Embracing the Joy of Penance
Though penance involves sacrifice, it ultimately leads to joy and renewal. By atoning for our sins and uniting with Christ’s suffering, we prepare our hearts for the glory of Easter.
