Our RCIA Gift Guide: Heaven Will Be Celebrating These New Catholics, and So Should You!
Mar 11, 2015 by Gretchen Filz
Each year at the Easter Vigil, scores of catechumens and candidates in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA program) receive the Sacraments of Initiation into the Catholic Church (Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation).
It is a big step for them as they declare, for the first time in their lives, and often after overcoming significant struggles in reconciling with the beliefs of the Catholic Church, that
“I believe and profess all that the holy Catholic Church teaches, believes and proclaims to be revealed by God.”
For us Catholics, this bold statement of faith from new converts should be treated as a very special thing in the sight of God. We should celebrate these new members of the Church with a proper homecoming, as heaven is surely doing the same.
Because receiving God's saving grace through the Sacraments is something to be celebrated, everyone coming into the Church should receive a keepsake or a memento of the special occasion (especially from their sponsors and any Catholic family members). Preferably something that will help them to grow in their faith as new Catholics.
Every new convert should have that sacramental, whether it be a crucifix, a rosary, or a prayer book, that they can look at with gratefulness and say, "I received this gift when I became Catholic." It will always be a reminder for them of all the graces they received that helped bring them home to the Catholic Church.
Heaven will be celebrating these new Catholics, and so should you!
If the new Catholic has no one other than their sponsor to give them a gift, it is important for members of their new parish family to step in and give them a gift as well, even something as small as a prayer card is something that can be kept and appreciated. They need the encouragement as they begin this new and exciting walk of faith.
