Wearing a saint medal is a unique expression of our Catholic faith. Medals prompt us to live out our faith in our daily lives.
Of course, Catholic medals don’t function as magic amulets : they do not cause spiritual graces. However, once they are blessed by a priest or deacon, medals serve as sacramentals—that is, special devotional objects that, by God’s power, can dispose and prepare us to receive grace.
We often inscribe prayers onto medals to remind us to seek the intercession of particular saints.
For example, the Miraculous Medal is the most popular Catholic medal. It is engraved with the words O Mary, Conceived Without Sin, Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee, recalling Our Lady’s powerful intercession on our behalf.
Wearing a saint medal is similar to wearing a locket with a picture of a loved one. We wear lockets with someone’s picture as a way to honor our love and commitment to that person. In the same way, wearing a saint medal reminds us of our devotion to a particular saint.
Another popular medal is the St. Benedict Medal, known for its power against spiritual evil through the intercession of St. Benedict.
There are also medals honoring nearly every patron saint out there, so that all of us can find a way to honor and remember our favorite!
