At first glance, we can all relate to Martha. When we have guests, we want to make sure they are comfortable. We get them drinks and prepare nice food and run around the house making sure everything is tidy and clean.
It’s harder to relate to Mary—isn’t it rude to let your sister rush about, doing everything alone, while you relax and listen to the guests? Wouldn’t it be much better to help her and take some of the load off her hands?
It feels like a surprise each time we read that Jesus—instead of telling Mary to help—gently chides Martha. He does not blame either sister—He knows how necessary Martha’s work is—but He points out that Mary is putting her time to good use in choosing the “better part.”
Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him. She has turned all her thoughts to Jesus, hearing His voice and contemplating Him. But this is not what He means when He speaks of the “better part.” He is pointing out that Mary acts with great love, while Martha performs her duties with worry and concern.
Jesus reminds us through Martha that whatever we do, whether working or resting or praying or recreating, we should do all with love. Love is the “better part,” the “one thing needful” in all that we do. It is the love with which we perform our duties that makes those duties fruitful and worthwhile.
