This wonderful nightlight is an example of a lost art form originating in the mid-19th Century known as the lithophane. After a finely detailed wax mold is expertly carved, porcelain is poured in carefully, and fired painstakingly to make the lithophane. Light refracted through varying thickness in the porcelain achieves an evocative and lovely artistic image.
