St. Robert Francis Bellarmine (1542-1621), a prominent theologian and one of the Church’s most learned figures during the Council of Trent, made significant contributions to Catholic theology.
Joining the Society of Jesus at 18, he became renowned for his preaching and scholarship before being ordained. Bellarmine held several prestigious positions, including papal theologian, and was known for his expertise in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, crucial for understanding Sacred Scripture.
His key works include De Scriptoribus Ecclesiasticis (1615), De Editione Latinae Vulgatae (1749), and Explanatio in Psalmos (1611), later renamed A Commentary on the Book of Psalms.
His Psalms commentary gained high praise, even from Protestant critics, and continued to be influential centuries later. In 1930, he was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church.
Bellarmine's work remains a vital resource for understanding the Psalms, blending profound insight, clarity, and reverence for the Scriptures.
His Commentary on the Book of Psalms, a nearly 400-page spiritual resource, continues to be reprinted, highlighting its lasting relevance.
